How Often Should You Visit the Dentist? A Practical Guide
Most people need a checkup every six months, but the right interval depends on your oral health, age, and risk factors. Here's how to know what's right for you.
The short answer
For most healthy adults and children, a dental checkup and cleaning every six months is the right interval. This gives your dentist enough time to catch cavities, gum inflammation, and other issues while they're still small and inexpensive to treat.
When you might need to visit more often
Some patients benefit from more frequent visits, typically every 3 to 4 months. This includes people with gum disease (periodontitis), diabetes, a history of frequent cavities, dry mouth from medication, or those currently undergoing orthodontic treatment such as braces or aligners.
Pregnant patients are also often advised to keep up regular checkups, since hormonal changes can increase the risk of gum inflammation during pregnancy.
When less frequent visits may be appropriate
Patients with consistently excellent oral hygiene, no history of cavities or gum disease, and low risk factors may be able to space checkups to once a year, based on their dentist's assessment. This should always be a decision made with your dentist rather than skipped on your own.
What happens if you skip checkups
Cavities and gum disease often develop without obvious pain in the early stages. Skipping checkups means small, cheap-to-treat problems can progress into root canals, extractions, or gum surgery, all more invasive and costly than routine prevention.
